Hafnium (Hf), in both Latin and English called Hafnium, is a silvery-grey, hard and corrosion-resistant metallic element. The melting point of hafnium is approximately 2233 °C and the boiling point is approximately 4603 °C. Hafnium has a high density, good corrosion resistance and a very high melting temperature. The metal is paramagnetic and is slightly attracted to magnets.
Hafnium sale: we supply a 1 g sample with a composition of Hf+Zr 99.95% and a maximum zirconium content of 0.5%.
Hafnium does not commonly occur alone in nature. It is almost always accompanied by zirconium because they have similar chemical properties and their atoms easily substitute each other in minerals. It is most commonly found in the mineral zircon, which is a significant raw material for obtaining both hafnium and zirconium.
Hafnium is primarily used in special alloys, nuclear power, and electronics. Due to its ability to absorb neutrons, it is used, for example, in the control rods of nuclear reactors. It is also added to refractory alloys that must withstand high temperatures and demanding operating conditions.
Hafnium oxide, known as HfO₂, also has significant applications. This material has a high dielectric constant and is used in the manufacture of modern electronic components, for example, as an insulating layer in certain types of transistors. Hafnium is also used in the production of special ceramic materials, coatings and components for high-temperature applications.
Hafnium was discovered in 1923 by Dutch physicist Dirk Coster and Hungarian chemist George de Hevesy. The element derived its name from the Latin name for Copenhagen – Hafnia. It was in Copenhagen that this metal was first identified during the research of zirconium-containing minerals.
Hafnium is also interesting for its physical properties. It has a high density, a high melting point and is resistant to many chemical substances. An oxidative protective layer forms on its surface in the air, which slows further corrosion.
Hafnium has several isotopes that occur naturally in the Earth's crust. Some of these are significant in the research of nuclear reactions. The hafnium-178m2 isotope is known as a high-energy metastable state, which has become a subject of scientific research.
