Product description

Tin (Sn) has a silver, slightly yellowish appearance and has been known to mankind for thousands of years. People knew how to process and shape tin from the middle of the 3rd millennium BC. You will often encounter tin in sacral buildings in the form of candlesticks, liturgical vessels, as well as in castles and palaces from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Even earlier, tin workers made plates, dishes, and kettles from tin. At home, you might find tin soldiers from your grandfather or medals.

  • The Czech name is Cín, the Latin name is Stannum, and the English name is Tin.

Tin is a soft metal with a melting point of 231.93 °C and excellent electrical conductivity. In the form of an alloy – solder, it is used in soldering electronic components onto printed circuit boards. Bronze is formed from one-third of the alloy, together with copper, or possibly with admixtures of other metals.

It is resistant to corrosion, which is utilized by manufacturers of some food preserves that are tin-plated.

When you bend a tin rod, a characteristic sound called "tin cry" is produced. Indium, cadmium, zinc, or frozen mercury also have a similar property.

Tin can exist in multiple forms that transition into each other – white tin changes to grey tin at a temperature of 13.2 °C. If a tin object is exposed to cold for a long time, it will gradually disintegrate into dust due to the so-called tin pest. This often happened, for example, in castles where it was cold during winter.

You can make alloys from tin, cast it into figures, and artistic objects.

White tin is a paramagnetic metal, it amplifies the external magnetic field and is weakly attracted to a magnet.

Grey tin is diamagnetic, it weakly weakens the external magnetic field and is slightly repelled by a magnet.

Try tin with 99.9% purity.
