Tantalum (Ta), in Latin and English Tantalum, is a metallic element that occurs in nature in the form of minerals such as tantalite, columbite, and niobite. It has a silvery-grey colour and is characterised by high resistance to corrosion; it is resistant to acids. The melting point of tantalum metal is 3017 °C and the boiling point is 5458 °C.

Tantalum is an exceptionally hard and strong metal, resistant to high temperatures and extreme conditions. Thanks to these properties, tantalum is primarily used in industry for the production of alloys for aviation, chemical reactors, X-ray tubes, cathode ray tubes, and electrodes for capacitors.

Tantalum is very resistant to corrosion and high temperatures, making it a suitable material for the production of surgical instruments and implants; it is completely inert to organic body tissues.

Thanks to its resistance to corrosion and chemical reactions, tantalum is also used as corrosion protection in the chemical industry. Tantalum is paramagnetic and is weakly attracted to magnets, similar to copper, for example.

Interestingly, the element tantalum got its name from the Greek god Tantalus, who was punished for stealing the nectar and ambrosia of the gods. Tantalus' son, Pelops, became a famous king, and the region of Peloponnese in Greece was named after him.
