Neodymium (Nd), Latin and English Neodymium, is a silvery-gray, soft, and heavy metal with a melting point of 1024 °C and a boiling point of 3074 °C. Neodymium is relatively abundant in nature and is found mainly in the minerals monazite and bastnäsite.
Neodymium for sale: we supply packaging with a purity of 99.9% in multiples of 1 g.
Neodymium is used in the production of strong permanent neodymium magnets, which are important for the production of electric motors, generators, sensors, hard drives, and electronics. Furthermore, neodymium is used as a catalyst in the production of plastics, rubber, and synthetic fibers.
The element was discovered in 1841 by the Swedish chemist Carl Gustaf Mosander, but he initially named it didymium. He believed it to be a separate element. About 30 years later, Per Teodor Cleve published the opinion that it was two elements. In 1885, the Austrian chemist Baron Carl Auer von Welsbach isolated praseodymium and neodymium from it, but pure neodymium metal was not successfully isolated until 1925. The name originated from Greek words meaning 'new' and 'twin'.
One of the largest producers of neodymium is China, where it produces more than 90% of the world's production. Important mining areas also include Brazil, India, South Africa, and Canada.
Interestingly, neodymium can change the color of light depending on temperature, pressure, and light intensity. Scientists use this, for example, in the production of colored glass and optical filters.
Another interesting use of neodymium is in the music industry for the production of magnetic pickups for guitars and bass guitars. Thanks to neodymium, these pickups are capable of creating a larger and more stable magnetic field, which improves the sound quality of the instruments.
