At normal temperature and pressure, gallium (Ga) is a silver, soft, non-toxic metal. At its melting point of 29.8 °C, it turns slightly silvery white. Gallium is used in electronics for the production of semiconductors, as galinstan as a replacement for toxic mercury in thermometers and medical devices, for the production of single-crystal wafers, for experiments and trials.
- Czech Gallium, Latin Gallium, English Gallium
In the form of an alloy with bismuth and tin, gallium is a material for producing dental fillings, as a non-toxic alternative to amalgam, which contains toxic mercury.
Gallium and gallium alloys can be shaped into various three-dimensional forms due to their low melting point and can also be used for 3D printing.
Gallium is also used for the detection of solar neutrinos, for example in the Gallium-Germanium Neutrino telescope at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory in Russia. This detector, according to available data, contains the largest amount of liquid gallium gathered in one place, namely 55–57 tons stored approximately 2 km underground.
Chemists have invented a prank where they make spoons out of gallium, which are barely distinguishable from aluminum spoons. If a guest puts such a spoon into a cup of hot tea, it will dissolve. Such tea is then no longer suitable or safe for consumption.
Gallium is also suitable for experiments and trials not only with magnetism, for example in conjunction with ferrofluid.
Gallium is a diamagnetic metal; it slightly weakens external magnetic fields and is weakly repelled by magnets.
Try gallium with 99.99% purity.
