Cobalt (Co), Latin Cobaltum, English Cobalt, is a silvery metal with a blue tint, which is hard, but also brittle and corrosion-resistant. The melting point of cobalt is 1495 °C, the boiling point is 3100 °C. Cobalt is ferromagnetic, has high coercivity, maintains its magnetic moment even without an external magnetic field, and can be easily magnetized. It is also part of durable SmCo magnets.
Cobalt for sale: we supply packaging with a purity of 99.9% in multiples of 1 g.
In nature, cobalt occurs mainly in the form of oxides, arsenides, and sulfides. The world's largest reserves of cobalt are in the Congo, where they produce almost 70%. Cobalt is also found in China, Canada, Australia, and Russia.
Cobalt has many industrial uses – as an alloy for the production of hard metals and carbides, which are used for cutting and grinding. Cobalt alloys are also used in the aerospace industry.
Cobalt can also be found in electrical engineering, mainly due to its high magnetic permeability. Cobalt magnetic materials are used in transformers, electric motors, and generators.
Cobalt colors were popular in art from the 18th century and are still used by artists today for pigments in painting and ceramics. Cobalt blue is one of the best-known and most popular colors.
Cobalt is also an important element in the development of high-capacity lithium-ion batteries for use in electric vehicles and other electrical devices, machines, and instruments.
Cobalt got its name from the German word 'kobold', which referred to a goblin. It was considered a malicious creature in mining that spoiled the miners' work. The presence of cobalt in nickel ores degraded the quality of these ores and also their processability, which posed a danger to the miners' health due to the release of poisonous gases. We supply cobalt with high 99.9% purity.
