How can I create a magnetic field that is as homogeneous as possible?

MagnetyUniversities and schools sometimes ask how to create a homogeneous (uniform) magnetic field for experiments. A homogeneous (uniform) magnetic field is a magnetic field in a given region of space whose magnetic induction is the same in magnitude and direction at all points in this region. It can be represented by straight, parallel, equally spaced induction lines.

To create the best possible homogeneous field, it is recommended to place two large magnets close to each other and connect the back sides of the magnets with an iron horseshoe. Magnets connected in this way will create a fairly homogeneous field in the air gap between the magnets. The smaller the gap between the magnets, the more homogeneous the magnetic field will be.

In the example above, two magnets KV-40-40-20-N with an edge length of 40 mm and a height of 20 mm were used. The magnets are 10 mm apart and the magnetic induction is approximately 0.95 Tesla (= 9500 Gauss).

CAUTION: If you want to make a "horseshoe magnet" yourself, be extremely careful when placing the magnets. Magnets attract each other much more readily than to the iron horseshoe. It is very difficult to place the magnets in the correct position even with the help of sticks and various holders without injury. If you are interested in such a "horseshoe magnet", please let us know. If there is a great interest, we will produce a few magnets and offer them for sale.
