RoHS and REACH compliance: what it means for magnets

RoHS & REACH Compliant
RoHS & REACH Compliant

When choosing magnets, you are likely interested in their magnetic force, shape, dimensions, surface finish, or other parameters. If you work in industry, electronics manufacturing, or care about health and the environment, you might be familiar with the RoHS and REACH certification abbreviations. At UNIMAGNET, we take these standards seriously. Find out what RoHS and REACH Compliant means and why it should interest you.

Quality that isn't seen, but matters

Magnets are technical products composed of various chemical elements and protective layers, such as nickel, neodymium, iron, copper, epoxy, PP, ABS plastics, and other substances. RoHS and REACH certifications guarantee that these materials are safe for human health—meaning for you or your customers—as well as for the environment.

1) RoHS Compliant: Magnets without hazardous chemicals

The abbreviation RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) refers to a European directive that restricts the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

Why does it concern magnets? Even though a magnet itself is not "electronics", it often becomes part of motors, sensors, or appliances. If a magnet contained prohibited substances, the final product would not pass inspection.

What does RoHS prohibit? Primarily heavy metals and toxic substances such as:

  • lead, mercury, and cadmium,
  • hexavalent chromium, sometimes used in anti-corrosion treatments,
  • specific flame retardants and plasticizers.

The magnets we supply comply with the current RoHS directive. You can integrate them without worry into any electronics intended for the European market.

2) REACH Compliant: Health protection first

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is a comprehensive EU regulation on chemical substances. Its goal is to ensure that products you come into contact with daily do not contain substances of very high concern, so-called SVHC substances.

What does it mean in practice? For magnets, REACH monitors whether chemicals that could be carcinogenic or harmful to reproduction occur during production or in the final product.

As a magnet supplier, we monitor the REACH list of substances of concern and guarantee that our magnets and magnetic products meet the strictest limits for safe use.

Shop with a certified dealer

You might be thinking: "After all, it's just a magnet, what could go wrong?" With cheap and uncertified sources, there are risks that are not apparent at first glance:

  • Health risk: Poor quality surface finish can contain irritants that cause allergies upon frequent skin contact.
  • Legal complications: If you manufacture products for the EU market, you must prove material compliance. Without RoHS/REACH certification, you risk product recall and high fines.
  • Ecological footprint: Certified production processes save nature and limit toxic waste.

Transparency as a standard

We sell magnets with high magnetic force and reliability. For all our products, we are able to provide technical documentation (Data Sheet) confirming compliance with European regulations.

Tip for companies: Do you need a declaration of conformity with RoHS or REACH for your project? We will be happy to provide the necessary documents.
